  • Bassist Michael Fiorino has a new disc out too, called Ensemble 456. If there’s a space between straight ahead jazz and fusion, Fiorino has found it, and is making some very cool music there. The only standard on the disc is a really nice version of Duke Ellington’s "Prelude to A Kiss," but nearly every WDCB listener will hear something they like on this mostly original album.

  • You all know Mike Fiorino; he’s a good friend of mine, and I’ve looked up to him, as a bassist, since back when I played guitar. I think he’s one of the finest players in town, and when I heard that he had released a cd, I took it for granted that it would have some great bass playing. Paul Coscino had the cd and we listened to it on the way home from a Wisconsin gig, and I was completely blown away by Mike’s writing and arranging skills. Writing for a crack horn section of Mike Levin, Dave Katz and Rich Lapka, this is as fine a job of arranging as I’ve heard. I urge you all to buy a copy immediately.
